Oliver Brown tried to enroll his daughter Linda Brown into an all white school, because the all black school was to far. The principal refused to let Linda attend the school. Oliver Brown and the NAACP ( National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) appealed to the Supreme Court on October 1,1951. Their case was combined with similar cases who were also challenging the school boards from South Carolina, Virgina, and Delaware. The Supreme Court heard the case for the first time on December 9, 1952 but couldn't reach a decision. On May 17,1954 the Supreme Court came to a decision that separate educational facilities are unequal. This didn't stop segregation all around the world but it was a big step in desegregating public schools.
